The Feynman Technique

A powerful learning strategy developed by physicist Richard Feynman. It helps you deeply understand any concept by forcing you to explain it simply.

Steps:

  1. Pick a topic

    • Choose the subject or concept you want to learn.
  2. Teach it to a child (or write it out simply)

    • Pretend you're teaching someone with no background knowledge.
    • Use plain language and analogies — no jargon.
  3. Identify your knowledge gaps

    • Where do you struggle to explain?
    • Which parts feel fuzzy or rely on big words?
  4. Go back to the source material

    • Re-learn those parts.
    • Simplify the explanation again.
  5. Refine and simplify

    • Rewrite or re-explain the topic in even simpler terms.
    • Use analogies and real-world examples where possible.

Goal:

If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough.
